Engineering face the future in Brasília

Message from UPADI’s President

We are very pleased to invite the entire Engineering Community of the Americas – from students to senior engineers, from small offices to large companies, from class entities to governmental agencies – to participate in a privileged forum of debates.

The XXXI UPADI Convention 2008 (from November 29 to December 2), which will precede the III WEC-2008 (from December 3 to December 6), will make Brasília into a global center of discussion on the role of the engineers and the challenges to be faced by Engineering.

We will be participating of lectures and round tables supported by groups of global specialists, specific parallel technical sessions on the different segments of engineering and turned to the basic themes of the events.

• Why was technological development not followed by social development?
• What can engineers do in light of the basic needs that devastate their countries?
• How should we act today to reduce poverty and democratize the conquests and the quality of life that Engineering makes feasible?
• How to integrate development for the poor countries of the Americas adding strengths, interchanging knowledge and technology to revert the delay at the several levels?
• How to create, make viable and maintain the infrastructure indispensible to sustained development?

These and other questions demand replies from the Engineering Community to the Civil Society, which we intend to give focusing on the proposed themes and highly relevant to the world at the present time.

The history of the progress would not be written without the effective participation of Engineering. But this history, at some moments in time, took inadequate turns, becoming quite often dramatic, unfair and cruel.
Emerging countries, equipped with large growth potential should trace a steady development strategy, which considers making their companies more competitive and their population better served by the State, private initiative and organized civil society set.

Meetings such as this in Brasília can contribute to change the plot of history, returning to Engineering its critical, active and transforming role, in the promotion of development and quality of life of the societies.

Message from the President of FEBRAE


We, engineers, are regarded by society as the promoters of progress.
And we are proud of our role as impelling agents of economic development. However, the engineer of the 21st century is also worried with the social repercussions of his work.

On the other hand, the very nature of our performance makes us modifiers of the environment. The opening of a road, the implementation of a factory, the construction of a power plant or even that of a small house affect nature.

To appease economic and social development with environmental care, indispensable to the sustainability of the planet, for the benefit of our future generations, is the challenge that we, from FEBRAE, propose to fully discuss at the XXXI Convention of UPADI, under the basic theme: “Engineering and Infrastructure for Social Development of the Countries of the Americas”.

We will be extremely happy to welcome you, arms wide open, from November 28 to December 2, in our capital, Brasília, a city that is a monument to Architecture and Engineering.
